Why I Just Walked Away From a Farm I Spent a Year Partnering With

When I left the corporate world to launch Single Source Harvest, I made a promise to myself and to you: uncompromised transparency.

I’m open about the fact that I don’t own olive groves. I am a curator. My mission is to hunt down the absolute cleanest, highest-quality, small-batch Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oils on the planet and deliver them directly to your kitchen.

Because I curate rather than produce, my reputation, and your trust, hinges on the integrity of my standards.

Last week, those standards were put to the test. And I had to make a decision that cost me a deal I had been building for over twelve months.

A Year of Relationship Building... Wiped Out in One Conversation

Last harvest, I sampled a high-polyphenol, certified organic EVOO from a small, boutique farm. It was extraordinary. The taste was lively, earthy and green, the pepperiness from the oleocanthal was intense, and the lab work was pristine.

For over a year, I stayed in close contact with the farm owner. We talked about soil health, harvest timing, and shipping logistics. I was excited to bring their oil to our Single Source Harvest community this season.

Then came the reality of small-scale agriculture.

This year’s harvest yields were lower than expected for their small grove. To fulfill order volumes, the producer gave me what they thought was good news: they were going to source additional organic olives from neighboring farms to make up the difference.

To most commercial olive oil companies, this is standard practice. To me, it was an immediate dealbreaker.

Drawing a Line in the Sand

When I heard that, I had to draw a firm line in the sand and politely walk away.

Why? Because the moment you start mixing olives from neighboring farms, you lose everything that makes EVOO truly exceptional:

1. The Risk of the "Bait and Switch"

When farms combine crops from multiple sources, a common industry trap opens up: batch testing discrepancy. A producer can easily send a pure, high-polyphenol sample from their own prize trees to the lab for testing, or to a curator like me for tasting, and then blend that oil with lower-grade fruit from neighboring plots before bottling.

Even if both farms are certified organic, there is no way to guarantee that the chemical purity, acidity, and antioxidant profile of the final bottle match the initial lab report.

2. Loss of Terroir and Traceability

"Single Source" means one specific grove, one specific climate, one specific harvest window. The soil, elevation, and care given to those specific trees create a unique profile. Mixing fruit from down the road dilutes that identity. It’s how premium oil turns into generic oil.

3. The Integrity of Our Name

We aren't called Single Source Harvest just because it sounds nice on a logo. If I compromised on a core value just to keep inventory on the shelf, I would be no different than the mass-market brands filling supermarket aisles with mystery blends.

How We Guarantee What Goes Into Your Bottle

Saying "no" to that farm was disappointing after a year of work, but it was also empowering. It re-anchored why this company exists.

When you purchase a bottle from Single Source Harvest, you aren't getting a commercial blend or a middleman's compromise. You are getting an oil that has passed a strict gauntlet:

  • 100% Single-Grove Integrity: No neighboring farm mix-ins, no bulk blending, no loopholes.

  • NMR Lab Testing: Uncheatable, precise chemical profiling that proves true polyphenol count and freshness (so no inflated numbers or bait-and-switch chemistry).

  • Strict Sensory Standards: Vibrant, fresh, peppery, and alive, tested by real palates, not just paperwork.

Quality over Quantity, Always

Curating this way means our inventory won't always be endless. When a verified single-batch harvest sells out, it’s gone until the next season's trees bear fruit.

It’s not the easiest way to run a business, but it’s the only honest way. When you open a bottle of our curated organic EVOO, you know exactly where it came from, exactly what's inside it, and that no compromises were made along the way.

Thank you for valuing quality, real food, and transparency as much as we do.
